For the third consecutive year, a Stokke product concept has been awarded “Red Dot: Best of the Best” for top design quality and ground-breaking design for the transformable children’s chair; Stokke® Steps™.
Stokke Steps is a unique seating system that grows with the child from birth to 10 years. Much attention has therefore been given to its timeless aesthetic design.
“We live by the vision “in the best interest of the child”. We believe that great design begins and ends with the user. A new product can only be justified when it achieves some kind of improvement, big or small, in someone’s’ life” says Hilde Angelfoss, Design Director in Stokke. “From our perspective, great design is a craft, achieved by hard work and a steady design process. You need to work your way through all of the details and functions thoroughly and analytically, while constantly keeping an eye on the big picture.”
The cradling motion of the bouncer will give the child a comfortable and protective space for activity and rest from birth. The bouncer will transform to a safe and comfortable newborn seat when mounted on the chair. Even from their early newborn stage, children highly appreciate spending time with the family around the table.
The Stokke Steps concept fulfills the baby’s need for comfort, protection and support. It also satisfies the toddlers need for active support and ergonomic seating in combination with longevity and high quality.
Stokke Steps has been designed in cooperation with Permafrost Design. Our aim has been to design a product that will last from birth throughout childhood. We have made a modular system to fit on our chair to fulfil the special needs you have for seating from birth up to 3 years. You can use it as a bouncer and can add elements to build a highchair.
Members of the design team for Stokke® Steps™ are Hilde Angelfoss, Director of Innovation & Design, Anders August Kittilsen, Tore Vinje Brustad and Andreas Murray.
Since 2006 Stokke has focused exclusively on designing premium children´s furniture and equipment within the highchair, stroller, baby carrier, home textiles and nursery segments. Our products promote bonding between parent and child, and ensure healthy development for young children.

Permafrost is a Norwegian design studio, united by a common belief in user-centric design; they believe a new product can only be justified when it achieves some kind of improvement, big or small, in someone’s life. Permafrost is particularly fond of projects that bridge the gap between technology and art. They believe designers have an obligation to turn all the world’s technological achievements into meaningful innovations in people’s lives.
This year, only 1.6 percent of all submitted products are awarded with the highest distinction “Red Dot: Best of the Best”. This means that Stokke® Steps™ possesses one of the most outstanding designs globally, in 2015! With 4,928 innovative entries from 1,994 participants from 56 countries in 2015 alone, the Red Dot Award: Product Design is now not only the largest and most recognized product competition in the world, but also the most international. This is the most important competition for product design, which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.
Submitted products are evaluated according to the highest standards. The adjudication process follows a canon of strict criteria, which is constantly adapted to the latest findings in formal, technical, manufacturing, societal, industrial and ecological requirements. Products are evaluated on many factors including their degree of innovation, functionality, formal quality and ergonomics. The best products receive the Red Dot Best of the Best award.
