Paying tribute to an icon
The end of an era is marked with the passing of renowned designer Peter Opsvik. On behalf of everyone at Stokke®, we want to express our deepest condolences to his loved ones, as well as heartfelt gratitude for the wisdom he shared with us.
Regarded as one of the most talented of his generation, Peter Opsvik was a brilliant and prolific designer. But he was so much more.
His philosophy of bringing children closer to the family, while giving them the freedom to move and grow, became the foundation of our guiding vision. For over 50 years, this belief has shaped every product we create and continues to inspire us today.
When Peter designed the iconic Tripp Trapp® chair in 1972, we couldn’t have imagined the lasting impact it would have, both on Stokke® as well as on millions of families for generations to come.
The Tripp Trapp® chair was the first of its kind, with striking visual impact and unmatched function. It redefined what a children’s chair could be and brought little ones to the table where they could connect with the rest of the family, all while being a true expression of Scandinavian design.
Peter believed that being part of life around the table helped children learn social and physical skills essential for healthy development. He understood that children should be seen and heard. They need space to play, be active, take a tumble or two, and more importantly, learn to get up again, smarter, stronger, and more confident.
Peter’s thinking will remain at the heart of everything we do, now and in the future. His legacy will live on.
